I-35 Speedway Recap 8-10-23

I-35 Speedway-Winston, Mo.

08-19-2023

By: Phillip Wilson, Track Announcer

Saturday was Trenton Coca-Cola night at I-35 Speedway as fans were treated to a quick efficient race program by track officials and drivers as the final checkered flag would drop just before 10pm. Trenton Coca-Cola representatives were on hand with giveaways for the fans as well as we start to get ready for next week’s Hwy 36 Auto and Diesel Mike Knight Memorial as the Pure Stocks will race for added money.

We started off feature racing with the E-Mods as they were only slowed by a red and two yellow flags before one lap was complete, after that the drivers went green to checkered as defending track champion Casey Burnett got back to his winning ways holding off challenges from second place finisher Tony Layne and third place finisher Mark Anderson. Current points leader Adam Dunwoodie pulled off before a lap was complete in his heat race due to transmission issues, but Dunwoodie would get the car figured out for the feature and wheel to a fourth place finish and Lauren Waterbury ran in the top five all race long finishing fifth.

In Pure Stock action Jon Boller Jr would pick up his second win of the season as he held off tough challenges from the current points leader Jeffrey Sears to get back to McCarthy Autogroup Victory Lane. Boller would lead all the circuits as once again, once the class got going, they clicked off lap after lap. Sears would finish second with Anthony Whitham having another good run finishing third. Jakub Hisel had to retire from his heat race with a flat which would put him starting last in the feature. Hisel told the announcer to tell the fans to “expect a show” and then preceded to wheel his 27 racecar to a fourth place finish with Johnny Price right there in fifth with another good showing.

The Midwest Limited Late Model drivers would put on quite a show for the fans as Paul Glendenning, Tommy Cordray and points leader Houston Johnson would throw sliders and cross overs in a fierce battle for position, keeping the gap less than 1 second between the first and third place cars for the first half of the race. Glendenning would lead from the drop of the green flag and hold onto that lead throughout the feature as he raced his way into McCarthy Auto Group Victory Lane for the second time in as many weeks.  Cordray and Johnson swapped positions a few times, with Cordray finishing second and Johnson in third. Michael King would come in fourth after only his second night racing a late model this year, moving from the Modified class.

The USRA B-Mods proved you don’t need numbers to put on a great show for the fans as track points leader, Corey Myers would roar to his second win of the season. Myers would be challenged by Bobby Penney and Chase Moulton after a few restarts but would eventually pull away. Penney and Moulton would swap second and third place a few times before Penney eventually settled into second and Moulton third. Scott Kunze would make it a four car battle a few times more before having to retire from the race due to mechanical failure.

The Medieval USRA Stock Cars put on a thrilling show for the fans as they ran green to checkered. Nic Hanes would pick up his fourth win of the season with Jason Estes all over his back bumper for the entire length of the race as he finished a close second at the line. Chris Dishong, Doug Keller, Jeff Dixon and Brandon Dixon would mix it up as well challenging the two front runners a few times before going into battle against themselves. Dishong would finish third, points leader Jeff Dixon fourth and Brandon Dixon fifth.

Tyler Hibner would pick up his ninth win of 2023 as well as taking over the points lead in the USRA Modifieds at I-35 Speedway for the first time since the first month of the season. His dad, Lee Hibner would work his way up to a second-place finish on the last lap of the twenty lap event securing a first and second Hibner father son finish. Steven Glenn captured third as he battled Paden Phillips for position with Phillips finishing fourth and Tyler Grooms continuing his good season and fifth.

In Sport Compact competition Harold Robb Jr would finally put his 007T car in McCarthy Autogroup Victory Lane as he roared to a huge win.  Robb would lead a lot of laps in the last month, only to have the sweet taste of victory snatched away at the last possible minute finishing second five out of the last seven weeks but Saturday night he could not be denied. Points leader Brad Mick would start deep in the field, working his way up to second, Jeremy Sims, Jonnathon Hartman and Elijah Hoyt battled hard with tight racing action as they finished third, fourth and fifth.

In the Jr Sport Compacts all competitors continue to improve and prove that they are the future of this great sport. Grant Sheetz would grab the lead from the drop of the green flag and lead until about the halfway point before Brycen Bouzek would work his way around and capture his sixth win of the season. Sheetz would finish a close second with a top two in points throwing down behind the top two with points leader Payton Hanes in third and Maddy Barr in fourth.

The TNT Builders Kids Power Wheels were once again in action during intermission.  Evan Dixon picked up the win, with Cason Arbuckle in second and Jackson Keller in third. Thank you to TNT Builders in Lamoni, IA for sponsorship of the Kids Power Wheels races.

Congratulations to fan of the week Tucker Bond, sponsored by Show-Me Synthetics (Robbie Skipper), Thomas Racing, Austin Johnson Racing and Bud Wilson Racing Family.

Join us next week for the the Hwy 36 Auto and Diesel Mike Knight memorial as we honor the track prep guru. Pure Stocks will race for the big trophy as well as an increased payout for the top four. $700 to win, $400 for second, $300 for third, $200 for fourth and $70 to start.
