I-35 Speedway Race Results Finish Strong Mike Tanner Memorial

Finish Strong Mike Tanner Memorial at I-35 Speedway on June 20, 2020 was exactly that, Finish Strong.  The competition was fierce.  The on track racing was “side by side, you lead a lap, no, I will lead this lap, oh no we touched,  I want the low side, no, the top side might be best” competition.  Late race passes to Finish Strong was the norm.  Let’s recap all this excitement.

The first class of the night was the Show Me Vintage.  Competitors from several various Vintage Racing Organizations were in attendance and the twelve-car field created lots of fun and lots of action.  Daniel Schmidt and Dan Schmidt were the heat winners.  When the 12-lap feature was complete it was Daniel Schmidt with the win.

The E Mods boasted a full field of competitors.  Heat winners were Chris Dishong, Casey Burnett, and Bobby Lopez.   Kameron Hanes was the early leader but was overtaken late in the race by eventual winner Casey Burnett.  Third place was Shawn Burns, followed by Blake Bland and Kit Bailey.

Pure Stocks provided a great battle for the win.  Early leader Brandon Dixon had his hands full with Blaine Yonts on his rear bumper.  Immediately behind them was Chester Kaufman and Rieli Yonts.  For three laps Yonts, Kaufman, and Yonts were racing three wide for second.  Then on lap 9 the Finish Strong kicked in for Blaine Yonts as he powered by on the low side to pass Dixon for the lead.  At the checkered it was Blaine Yonts, Dixon, Kaufman, Yonts with Travis Cavin finishing fifth. Heat winners were Kriston Hisel and Brandon Hoover.

The Sport Compact racing was two and three wide race for the lead.  The initial leader was David Miller III, next lap was John Willard, then Jason McCaulley, then Miller, no wait it was Willard, watch out here comes McCaulley, at the end finishing strong was Willard, then McCaulley, Miller, Devin Schmidt, and Dylan Bruhn.

The $1,500 to win USRA A Mod feature was next on the track.  Mark Dotson and Tyler Hibner led the competitors to the green.  Dotson grabbed the early lead and appeared to hold back the leading modified aces in the area, Ricky Thornton, Chad Lyle, Jesse Sobbing, Lee Hibner, and CJ Lyle.  Dotson led through lap 18 but a late caution created a green, white, checkered finish.  At the restart Thornton displayed his finish strong technique powering by Dotson for the win.  Tyler Hibner, Lyle, and Sobbing rounded out the top 5.  Heat winners were Dotson and Chad Lyle.

The 24-car field of USRA B Mods followed the A Mods with a dandy race of their own.  The early battle was between Jake Richards and Nic Hanes, the front row.  Hanes led early but Richards got under him for the lead.  For several laps the battle for first and second was observed by the competitors battling for third, Daniel Harris, Randy Smith, Jr., and Lonnie Hibner.  At the checkered it was Richards, Hanes, Harris, Smith Jr., and Hibner.  This was Richards fourth win in five nights of I-35 Speedway racing.

Twenty USRA Stock Cars took the track for the next to last feature of the night.  The early leader was Austin Bouzek and he had constant pressure from Doug Keller.  Twice Keller passed Bouzek only to have a yellow come out placing young Bouzek back in the lead.  Waiting in the wings was Gary Donaldson, Jesse Sobbing and Jeff Dixon.  At the checkered it was Bouzek, Keller, Donaldson, Sobbing and Dixon.

The Midwest Limited Late Models were the last feature of the night.  Point leader Kerry Davis grabbed the lead of the 20-lap feature from the outside front row.  Inside front row pole starter Bobby Penney had a long run setup on his car.  As the laps were winding down, he was putting pressure on Davis, pulling even on the white flag lap.  At the checkered it was Davis for his sixth win of the year, then Penney.  Third was Paul Glendenning, fourth last year’s champion Tommy Cordray, and fifth was Houston Johnson, the only other driver with a feature win in 2020 in this class.

Next week at I-35 Speedway it will be the Ninth Annual Racin for Rian, an event started by the Wilson family to benefit the St. Luke’s Hospital NICU.
