By I-35 Speedway Track Announcer, Mark Merrell
(Winston, Missouri) When describing I-35 Speedway, most people would say that it’s a 3/8th Mile high banked lighting fast dirt track, hosting exciting action every Saturday night, with two, and three wide racing. During Rod End Supply Night At The Races, Drivers offered another element, running four, and briefly five wide, putting the fans on their feet.
Matt, “Maddog” Dorssom has been dominating the E-Mods so far, with back-to-back wins to start the 2019 racing season. Shaunie Lanning has been runner-up both weeks as well. In the early stages, Dorssom showed the way with Steven Makar, and Jeremy Curless Hot In pursuit. Lanning was not far behind, racing her way through the pack. Dorssom held on for the win, making it a perfect, three-for-three wins. Makar finished second, with Lanning third, Curless fourth, and Leroy Morrison fifth.
Rylee Fuller won her heat race to start the night, and looked to be the car to beat for the feature, as she started outside row one, next to D J Barnes in the Pure Stocks. Unfortunately, Barnes and Fuller got together, forcing them to the back for the restart. Ron Hill, who won opening night, fought his way through the pack, after passing Cody King, Tobin Bartlett, and Blaine Younts. Kerry Ayers, always a fast competitor, met with the outside retaining wall out of turn four, ending his night. Hill, running up front, was having a fuel pump problem late in the race. Hill kept his foot in the throttle, and drove to his second feature win of the year, with King second, Bartlett third, Younts fourth, and Albert Curtis rounding out the top five.
In the POWRi Midwest Lightning Sprint Cars, Bobby Layne is a true veteran of racing, winning at more tracks in feature events that most everyone in the Midwest. Layne won his heat race, as did Kyle Lewis, who was impressive all night. At the drop of the green flag, Layne shot to the lead, with Lewis right on his bumper. Layne was very fast through turns one, and two, and Lewis had the speed in three, and four, but couldn’t seem to get the momentum he needed to get by Layne. In the final lap, Lewis again tried unsuccessfully to pass Layne, but a slower sprint car slowed Layne slightly going into turn three. Eyeing his chance, Lewis hit the accelerator, going side-by-side with Layne out of turn four, and racing into McCarthy Auto Group Winner’s Circle, edging out the legend, Layne for the victory.
Tommy Cordray marched into I-35 Speedway looking for a, three-peat in the Midwest Limited Late Models. Houston Johnson, and Mike Taylor, Jr hit the gas in row one for the start. Cordray, inside row three, was weaving his way up to the front, as Mike Taylor continued with the lead. Greg Truelove was going door-to-door as well. Chad Fuller looked fast in his first outing for the 2019 season. Taylor And Cordray had an epic battle, lap after lap. Truelove challenged Cordray for second, and made a successful pass, sliding into the second spot. Taylor held off the field for the win, but, unfortunately, was disqualified after a post race inspection, handing to win to Truelove, with Cordray second, Michael King third, Chad Fuller fourth, and Houston Johnson fifth.
Isaiah Penton and David Miller III started on the front row For The Sport Compacts feature, with Jason Teel, and John Willard in row two. Richard McCaulley has been very quick in the first two races on the year, and was hopeful to take his race car to victory lane, as was Joesph Mick, starting inside row four. Willard ran quickly to the front of the field, with McCaulley and David Miller. Willard, who was plagued with tire issues the past two weeks, as well as in his heat race, was not to be denied, taking his racing machine to McCarthy Auto Group Winner’s Circle. Willard revealed after the race, that the win was his 54th in his current race car. Stating that, “You can’t drive 55,” Willard announced that after his next, and 55th feature win, he is scrapping his current racing machine, and unveiling a new race car.
The USRA Out-Pace B-Mods put on an amazing display of racing talent. Danan Knott, last week’s feature winner, started on the pole, to the disdain of the other drivers. Knott was lighting fast out of the box on opening night, and looked to be in his way to his second win of the year. Shadren Turner, who bested Knott opening night for the win, started just behind the 18k of Knott for the feature. Knott grabbed the lead quickly, with Chase Gavin just behind him in second. As the field fanned out, racing into turn one, and out of turn two, they ran four wide, and nearly five wide, to the amazement of the thrilled fans. Galvin pursued Knott, until the pair raced into turn three, and a spinning 3D of Johnathan Barnett at the top of the banking. Knott just managed to inch by Barnett, but Galvin was not so fortunate, as Galvin and Barnett made contact, ending Galvin’s night. Turner moved up to second, with Ethan and Lucas Isaacs, Lonnie Hibner, and Daniel Harris racing up toward the front. Another caution flag came out with two laps remaining. On the restart, Knott couldn’t get up to speed, drifting high out of turn four. Turner made his move to the lead, racing into victory lane, with Ethan Isaacs second, Knott third, Lucas Isaacs fourth, and Lonnie Hibner fifth.
Thomas Ground’s 2019 racing season at I-35 Speedway had been a heartbreaker. On opening night, Ground rolled his USRA American Racer Late Model coming out of turn two, ending upside down. During last week’s feature, Ground was threading his way through the pack, when a mechanical problem sent him out of turn four, and into the outside retaining wall, coasting to a stop near turn one. Ground started on the pole, and was again, very fast at the drop of the green flag. Jaylen Wettengel challenged Ground for the lead several times, as did Jeff Dixon. Wettengel and Dixon raced side-by-side for several laps. Ground, proving that perseverance, and third time is the charm, held off Dixon and Wettengel for the feature win.
The USRA A-Mods rolled out for their feature. Last year’s I-35 Track Champion, Dennis Elliott, has so far be denied a trip to victory lane, as Nic Bidinger, and Darron Fuqua scored wins the first two weeks. Elliott was nearly the winner on the second night, when an errant pass sent him high up the track. Lee Hibner, who had stepped away from driving duties for the past twelve years, decided the time was right to come back, and he did just that. Hibner started on the pole next to Ed Noll. Elliott began his quest for his first win of the year inside row three. Hibner ran quickly to the front of the field, as the USRA A-Mods were stacked up in a high speed traffic jam. Suddenly, Elliott squeezed his way past the other drivers, and into second, setting up a true battle between he and Hibner. With Elliott running at the bottom, and Hibner up high on the cushion, the two raced side-by-side. In the final laps, Hibner pulled away for the win, with Elliott second, Austin Johnson third, Houston Johnson fourth, and Tyler Hibner In fifth.
Next Saturday, I-35 Speedway will host, Missouri One Call Night At The Races, and a visit from the Show Me Vintage Racers
