Race Recap I-35 Speedway June 13, 2020

The legendary I-35 Speedway was the place to be on June 13, 2020 to get your money’s worth of racing fun!  The inaugural debut of the USAC Midwest Wingless Sprints was a huge success with 31 competitors in this class.  Promoter Raul Romero and driver Chris Parkinson deserve a ton of credit for this initial success.  But wait you want more; 15 Midwest Lightning Sprints were also in attendance.  But wait there was more, E Mods, Pure Stocks, Sport Compacts, Midwest Limited Late Models, and the three USRA always exciting classes the B Mods, Stock Cars, and A Mods all there to put on nonstop night of racing action.

Three heats of E Mod action started the night with Shaunie Lanning, Casey Burnett, and Kameron Hanes claiming the wins.  Bringing the E Mod competition to the green for the feature was young Michael Taylor III as the passing point leader.  He sat the early pace and eventually was overtaken by a tough field of competitors.  Shaunie Lanning claimed her third win of the 2020 season followed by current point leader Kameron Hanes.  Bobby Lopez, Josh Marshall, and Blake Bland rounded out the Top 5.

Pure Stocks enjoyed a strong field of cars with two heats of eight.  These preliminary battles were claimed by Nate Barnes and Cody King.  Most of the feature race these two drivers were nose to tail and occasionally side by side with Barnes claiming the checkered over King.  Rounding out the Top 5 per the transponder system were Chester Kaufmann, Jimmy Smith, and Brandon Dixon.

The four-cylinder fun of the Sport Compacts were next on the track.  David Miller III captured both the heat and the feature.

Following the four-cylinder fun was the wide tired super-fast class the Midwest Limited Late Models.  Exciting from the drop of the green in the heat as points leader Kerry Davis and Houston Johnson somehow got together at the start with Johnson’s car scooped up by the wedge nose of Davis.  Johnson was able to continue but Davis had to leave the track and repair the damage. The heat race was won by Paul Glendenning.  At the start of the feature it appeared it would be anyone’s race but here comes Davis from starting last on the field.  Lap three it was a three-wide shootout between Davis, Johnson, and pole sitter Glendenning.  Davis shot to the lead never to relinquish with Johnson quickly in tow.  At the checkered it was Davis, Johnson, Tommy Cordray, Mike Taylor II, and Alvie Christofferson.

Keeping up the speed the USAC Wingless Sprints made their maiden race at I-35 Speedway.  These power pounding open wheel beasts from years past brought excitement to the fans in the stands and the racers themselves.  Sliding sideways through the turns or ridge riding the cushion they came to put on a show of speed.  Heat race wins went to Wyatt Burks, Kory Schudy, Don Droud, and Brian Beebe.  The Top 8 in the B Feature transferred to the A feature and was won by Charles Davis Jr.  Claiming the inaugural win for this series was Schudy followed by Wesley Smith, Droud, Chris Parkinson, and Ty Hulsey.

The Midwest Lightning Sprints enjoyed their third straight week of I-35 Speedway racing action.  Jeff Bard and Bobby Layne took the checkered flag first in their respective heats.  Come feature time it was Stanley Kreisel who likes the longer laps as he claimed his second win in the last three weeks.  He was followed by Chase Fischer, Ken Billings, Mark Billings, and Layne.

It was USRA racing action time with the B Mods, Stock Cars, and A Mods set to take on the challenges of their competitors.  The super competitive B Mod preliminary heat races were claimed by Steven Clancy, Ethan Isaacs, and Chase Galvan.  The super smooth racetrack set up a fantastic feature race.  The Brothers Isaac (Ethan and Lucas) loving smooth slick tracks were off and running at the drop of the green.  At times it was side by side and other times it was nose to tail between them.  Close by were their competitors awaiting a mistake which never occurred.  At the finish it was Ethan Isaac with the win followed by Lucas, then Clancy, Galvan, and Daniel Harris.

USRA Stock Car National Point Leader Doug Keller calls I-35 Speedway home.  Tonight, he had competition and lady luck was not shining on him.  The heat race winner was last year’s track champion Jeff Dixon.  Keller grabbed the early lead and was cruising to what appeared to be another win when suddenly on the front straight he slowed and pulled into the infield on the backstretch.  This opened the door for a nose to tail do not make a mistake battle between Tony Manley and Dixon.  On the fifteenth lap it was Manley with the win and Dixon on his bumper.  Third was Austin Bouzek, followed by Greg Keuhn, and Gene Stigall.

The last feature of the night was a barn burner. Ed Noll and Lee Hibner were the early contestants for the lead when Hibner passed Noll on the high side out of two.  Then Darren Shaw entered the battle trying to pass Hibner on the low side.  CJ Lyle entered the battled for the lead following Hibner on the high side.  When all was said and done Hibner held off all challengers to claim the win.  Shaw was second, Mark Dotson third, FSK Rod End Hard Charger was Austin Johnson who started ninth on the field and finished fourth, and Lyle finished fifth.  Heat race winners were Lee Hibner and Tyler Hibner.

Next up at I-35 Speedway is the 2nd Annual Finish Strong Mike Tanner Memorial.  Make your plans to be there for this $1,500 to win A Mod special.
