Race Recap 10-17-20

Racing at I-35 Speedway on October 17, 2020 was a night of Green, White, Checkered finishes as three features were completed with this racing format.  Another feature finished with a Green, Green, White Checkered finish.  Wow what talent was on display on this night!

The super smooth track hosted the E Modifieds as the first class of the night. Casey Burnett won the first heat earning a pole position start.  Jeremy Curless and Zach Boyd won the other two heats.  Burnett raced to the lead from the pole and never relinquished the position.  The real battle was for second, at one-point Michael Taylor, Shaunie Lanning, and Chris Dishong were three wide out of four in this battle.  Lanning made the pass on Taylor late in the race, but it was called back because a yellow flag occurred on that lap.  At the checkered it was Burnett, claiming his 9th win of the year and the 2020 E Modified Championship.  Taylor was second, Lanning third, and Dishong came home fourth.  This was the first race to end with a Green, White, Checkered finish.

Pure Stocks were second in the night’s line up of events.  Heat wins were earned by Jeff Dixon, Brandon Dixon, and Reili Yonts.  That was exactly how they finished the A feature, Jeff Dixon first, Brandon Dixon second, and Reili Yonts was third.  This race had a similar eerie feel that it was a repeat of the E Mod feature, Jeff Dixon from the pole position races into first place and is challenged by 2020 Pure Stock Track Champion Brandon Dixon.  At one point the battle for second was three wide, when the challengers were done it was Jeff Dixon with the win, Brandon Dixon second earning enough points for the Championship, and Reili Yonts third, and Johnny Price coming home fourth.

Late Model action took a complete surprise.  Kerry Davis has dominated this class this year, but others have been stepping up their game to provide him outstanding competition.  Tonight, it happened, lap 15, Davis leading, coming out of turn 2, Paul Glendenning slides his Late Model hot rod under Davis and passes him for the lead.  Five laps late it is Glendenning with a two second lead claiming the victory.

USRA B Mods were the next class to enter competition in the gladiator ring.  Twenty-five competitors came to do battle and some of the best in the business were up front at the start of the green.  Shadren Turner charged to the lead, but this was a race “don’t make a mistake or it will cost you” race.  Turner would protect the bottom but don’t get too high because Dayton Pursely was there if he made a mistake.  Conversely if Pursley slipped it would have been Kris Jackson to fill that hole.  Not to be outdone, Troy Hovey was there to make his move.  At the finish it was Turner, holding down the position and claiming his 6th win.

USRA Stock Cars was the third race of the night finishing with a Green, White, Checkered.  As it has been most of the year it was Doug Keller with win followed by Jeff Dixon.  Déjà vu it was again a Keller/Dixon finish.  This was Keller’s 16th win of the season, but he has yet to claim the Championship as Dixon sits only 87 points.  Two more skirmishes remain in the season to determine who will the 2020 Track Champion of the USRA Stock Cars.

Tyler Hibner has yet to complete the USRA A Mod Championship even though he has quite the lead.  Lee Hibener and Ed Noll are not mathematically eliminated, yet.  On this night it was the young newlywed, Austin Johnson, who had the untouchable car!  Johnson started 7th on his heat and drove to the win putting him on the pole of the feature.  Outside of Johnson was Ed Noll, winner of the first feature.  Both drivers got a great start at the beginning and separated themselves from the pack.  Johnson maintained the lead after the restart on lap 17 with Noll holding onto second.  Johnson and his “on a rail racecar” set sail for the checkered as he claimed his second win of 2020.  Noll was second, Kevin Blackburn third, and Tyler Hibner was fourth.

With his 17th win of the season John Willard has officially claimed the Sport Compact Championship.   David Miller came home second but is 204 points behind after tonight and has been mathematically eliminated from the chase for the championship.   Christian Pease claimed third in the feature this night.

Two more weeks of racing remain on the 2020 schedule as we still have some championships to decide.  Racing at the legendary speedway continues October 24 and October 31.  Bonfire Banquet will be held a the track on November 7 to honor our champions, rookies of the year, and other special awards.  Make your plans to be a part of all the racing and festivities remaining in the 2020 season.
