I-35 Speedway Show Me Shootout Weekend Recap

Show Me Shootout Weekend is now in the history books of I-35 Speedway!  This two-day Friday and Saturday event culminated with the USRA Ironman Show Me Stock Car 30 lap shootout on Saturday, July 11. These gunslinging drivers came from various corrals (states) bringing their horses and buggies (racecars) to lay their claim as Sheriff of the posse!

What a Stock Car race, what a great weekend, great racing in all the classes!  Let’s recap both nights just in case you missed the excitement.

Friday, Night One, opened with the always exciting E Mods the first class of the two-night event.  This class pulled double duty competing both nights.  Friday night saw Shaunie Lanning and Kameron Hanes win their respective heat races.  Feature time Lanning jumped to a lead and cruised to her fifth win.  Casey Burnett was second, Hanes third, Michael Taylor III finished fourth, and the recent Oak Park graduate Blake Bland brought home fifth.

The Pure Stocks experienced a new winner on Friday as Kriston Hisel brought his steed home in first place. Blaine Yonts claimed second from his fifth row outside starting spot, third was Brandon Rice, fourth Brandon Dixon and fifth Conrad Kaufman. Hisel and Jimmy Smith won the heat races.

Sport Compacts have been dominated by John Willard or David Miller III in the win columns.  They each won a heat race.  As they battled for the win it was Willard claiming his 7th feature victory.  Miller was second, Christian Pease was third, Chris Lewis fourth, and Alexander Foote was fifth.

The Midwest Limited Late Models made this Friday Night Super Special.  The initial two laps it appeared there would be a tight race as then seven-time winner Kerry Davis was in a side by side battle with the one six of Bobby Penney.  After two laps of tight pressure it was Davis grabbing the lead and his eighth win.  He was followed by Paul Glendenning, Tommy Cordray, Dean Wray, and Mike Taylor Jr.

All this great racing was concluded with the fantastic band Dammit Jim playing your favorite music on the Trackside Bar and Grill veranda.

Saturday brought night two of this Show Me Shootout Weekend.  Thirty-Eight of the top cowboys in the Stock Car world arrived for a chance to claim the Sheriff badge and oh yeah, the $3,000 that went with the win. Joining in the track conquering event were the E Mods, Show Me Vintage, the USRA B Mods, and the USRA A Mods.

The E Mods started the night with three heats.  Claiming those wins were Kameron Hanes, Casey Burnett, and Michael Taylor III.  Burnett from the outside front row grabbed the lead and his third win of the year. Finishing second was Taylor, third was Hanes, fourth was Blake Bland, and Bobby Lopez claimed fifth.

Dan Schmidt drove his vintage racing machine to the victory in the Show Me Vintage class.  Allen Guthrie came in second followed by Rodney Ashworth, Brian Strong, and Tim Barker.

The super smooth dry slick track provided an outstanding OK Corral type shootout in the USRA B Mods.  The Earp brothers and Doc Holliday had nothing on the Shadren Turner, Nic Hanes, Tyler Cadwallader, and Ethan Isaacs shootout.  Turner held off the early challengers but as the laps wore on it was Cadwallader making the charge out of turn 2 taking Isaacs with him to claim the checkered.  Hanes was third, Turner fourth, and Chase Galvan fifth.  Special mention was B feature winner Lonnie Hibner driving to a sixth-place finish.

The USRA A Mods was a battle between an old gunslinger and the new kid on the block.  Mark Dotson grabbed the lead from his outside front row starting spot but all 20 laps he was hounded by young Austin Johnson.  Johnson could pull even on the straights but could never get the lead as Dotson claimed the win.  Third was Tyler Hibner, fourth was Darren Shaw a heat race winner, and fifth was Houston Johnson.

The USRA Ironman Stock Cars were the main event for the night.  Qualifying heat race winners were Jesse Sobbing, Doug Keller, Patrick Graham, and Troy Hansmeier.  B Feature winners were Mich Ross and Abe Huls.  The computer-generated Top 8 redraw put Minnesota gunslinger Derek Green on the pole with local driver Kacey Shields on the outside front row.  At the drop of the green the shootout was on.  Green led the early laps holding off numerous challenges, but thirty laps was tough on his tires.  The top five battle was more or less a war as Sobbing, Gary Donaldson, Green, Graham, and Derrick Agee began swapping occasional paint as they worked to get inside each other. Lap after lap it was who could get lower.  Sobbing eventually got lower than Donaldson and grabbed the lead in a door rubbing pass. At the checkered it was Sobbing claiming the $3,000 prize and the Sheriff badge of the Show Me Stock Car Shootout, Donaldson came home second with a $2,000 payday, Graham was third for a $1,000 prize, Green was fourth, and Agee fifth.  Lasts year’s winner Abe Huls drove to sixth after qualifying through a B feature.

As always, the fun is at I-35 Speedway.  The Show Me Shootout was two nights of fantastic fun.  Next up for I-35 Speedway is the USAC Midwest Wingless Racing Association on Kaster Appreciation Night.
