I-35 Speedway Recap August 22, 2020

August 22, 2020 at I-35 Speedway was another night of great fun!  Nonstop racing action in all the classes with sometimes three and four wide competition.  The super smooth track provided a top and a bottom groove with the middle grooves for those wanting to go three and four wide.

Pure Stocks kicked off the action with a race where the first seven laps the old saying “you could throw a blanket over the leaders” would apply. Lap 3 Blaine Yonts would take the point away from Brandon Dixon.  Lap 7 Dixon returned the favor and took the point from Yonts with Chris Lierz making the battle three wide out of four.  At the checkered it was Dixon followed by Yonts, Lierz, and Johnnie Price.

The Midwest Lightning Sprints then took the track and again three wide racing from the start.  The 00 of Dave Hammonds led the first three laps.  Out of four foot to the floor the on lap four here came the #18 machine of Stanley Kriesel to snatch the lead from Hammonds and never look back.

The E Mods feature race was initially a battle between Kameron Hanes, Casey Burnett, and returning after a couple weeks of recovery Shaunie Lanning.   Michael Taylor III would join the battle for a bit.  Eventually he and Lanning both had restarts from the rear of the field.  At the finish it was back to back wins for Hanes, with point leader Burnett on his tail, followed by Kenny Reed, Lanning and Taylor.

The Midwest Limited Late Models has been dominated by Kerry Davis in 2020.  This week he had a challenge as Paul Glendenning grabbed the lead from the onset of the race. Lap 2 Davis has closed to Glendenning’s bumper but Glendenning was exceptional at making Davis earned the pass.  Davis made the slide for life move going in turns 3/4 which gained him the lead just as the yellow came out for a spin in turn 2.  Reverting a lap Davis was again second.  Four laps later Davis again utilized that slide for life in turns 3 and 4 and then was able to pull away for the win.

The Sport Compact field was brought to the green by John Willard.  The initial laps several cars would challenge Willard and actually a couple of times the bumps propelled Willard to the lead.  Willard went on to take the win.

The last three weeks Shadren Turner has owned the USRA B Mod class.  Make it four in a row for Turner who led all fifteen laps at one point he enjoyed a full straight lead.  The battle was for second between Lonnie Hibner, Nic Hanes, and Corey Meyers.  Hibner broke free late to pull up to Turner’s bumper at the checkered.

The USRA Stock Car class was paced point leader Doug Keller.  He was followed by Jeff Dixon and long time USRA competitor Steven Jackson.  There was a three-wide battle for fourth for a couple of laps between Greg Kuehn, Brad Whitney, and Joe Martin.  It was Keller with the win.

The USRA A Mod race was initially who would claim the lead at the git go, Mark Dotson running the high side and Austin Johnson running the low side.  Eventually Dotson pulled away on the high side and had a late challenge from points leader Tyler Hibner.  Dotson claimed the victory.

Next up the $1,000 to win “Mike Knight Memorial” for the Late Models.
