I-35 Speedway Race Recap Weekend 2

Great racing at I-35 Speedway on Seeburg Muffler Nights at the Races on Friday, May 15 and Saturday May 16 as race weekend 2 of compliance with the Missouri Show Me Strong Recovery Plan occurred.   The weekend of racing included 20 heat races and 13 feature events, racing for everyone to enjoy.  Four classes raced on Friday and four classes raced on Saturday and double features for the USRA classes.

What a great weekend to race, weather wise. The track received moisture overnight on Thursday, but the hard-working staff and great drying weather provided the opportunity to race on Friday and then the forecast weather never materialized until the races were complete on Saturday.

On Friday, the Show Me Vintage, the Sport Compacts, the Pure Stocks, and the E Mods, provided a super competitive race night.  Damon Clevenger, for the second weekend in a row, was the first Show Me Vintage racer to the Checkered Flag.  John Willard also was a repeat winner in the Sport Compact class, but second place Jason McCaulley and third place David Miller were on at his back bumper as they crossed the finish line.  The top 4 in the Pure Stock class on several occasions were racing so close the old saying of you could put a blanket over them applied.  At the finish it was Nate Barnes claiming the win.  The E Mods were the final race of the night and what a display of driving skill by Shaunie Lanning.  Trouble in the heat race relegated her to the 20th and last starting position on field.  While the race up front was initially a battle between last week’s winner Kameron Hanes, Justin Asher, Casey Burnett, and Blake Bland, Lanning was working her way into the battle.  With three laps to go she took the lead from Asher but a spinning car in turn 2 negated that pass.  On the single file restart Asher took off to lead the E Mods to checkered with Lanning second, followed by Burnett, Hanes, and Bland.

Saturday Racing, what a way to start the night!  Make up features from May 9 for the USRA B Mods, USRA Stock Cars, and USRA A Mods. The B Mod features were a who’s who of USRA B Mod competitors. Kris Jackson, made his way to the legendary I-35 Speedway after his home track postponed, and from his front row starting spot led the way from start to finish in the USRA B Mod makeup feature.  The USRA Stock Car make up feature was battle between Gary Donaldson, Doug Keller, last year track champion Jeff Dixon, and Tim Shields.  At the checkered it was Donaldson with the win.  The USRA A Modified makeup feature saw Darron Fuqua from his pole position start and lead the way to the win.  The battle behind Fuqua and closing late was CJ Lyle, claiming second, and then followed by Dean Wille, Gunner Martin, and I-35 Speedway Track Champion Dennis Elliott.

After the USRA make up features, a full night of racing was still in store with 11 heat races for the three USRA classes and the Limited Late Models, two B features for the B Mods, and four feature events.  The super smooth racing surface provided super thrilling door to door racing action.  Kerry Davis and Mike Taylor were the Limited Late Model heat race winners and finished one/two in the feature, making Davis two for two on the year.  The second B Mod feature of the night provided amazing racing as the qualifying races shuffled the starting field.  Veteran 41-year-old Jake Richards, from his third row starting position made his way to the front of the field to claim his first USRA B Mod feature of the year.  Closing on Richards at the end was make up feature winner Kris Jackson, who started eighth on the field.  The second USRA Stock Car feature of the night saw a shuffling of the results from the first feature.  Old Pro Doug Keller improved one position from the first feature to claim the trophy and young Austin Bouzek moved up from starting position nine to finish in second place.  Darron Fuqua made it a sweep of the USRA A Mods advancing from the seventh starting position to take his second checkered flag of the night.  Sedalia Missouri’s Terry Schultz finished second in the closing feature of the night, with Chad Lyle bringing his racing machine home third.

Over two race nights, which weather forecasters had predicted would not be possible, the I-35 Speedway Staff, the Racers and their crews, and the race fans made I-35 Speedway the place to be!
