Mother Nature got one on us last week, but it was back to business as usual last night, September 28, 2024 at I-35 Speedway with some of the best racing we’ve seen all season.
Tony Layne and Caleb Dennis had a very competitive battle early in the E Mods, but Layne would pull away from Brett Holman and a late charging Aaron Jones to win another feature.
In the Pure Stocks the race was between Jakub Hisel and Shaun Wirtz, with some late cautions bunching the field and giving Wirtz another chance, but he wasn’t able to close more than within half a car length of Hisel.
In Jr Sports Grant Sheetz got around JR Curtis early and the field followed him like the pied piper, allowing Sheetz to score another dominant feature win.
It was nearly a scary heat race for the Late Models, with contact between Tyler Hibner and Mark Dotson nearly sending at least one of them over. Hibner would be unable to make the feature, but Dotson would be able to repair his car and pull away from Tommy Cordray.
Adam Dunwoodie would pull away early and establish a lead, but Chris Wright would make his way through the field and make it interesting. Wright had car trouble while leading in his heat but would not be able to catch the 33D in feature.
In Sport Compacts points leader Brad Mick would be able to hold off hard charging Eric Schmidt late to score another feature win in a near photo finish.
In the Medieval USRA stock cars Chris Dishong would hold off Kristchon Hisel late to score another feature win. Trouble for pole sitter Chris Mercer would send him to the back early but he was able to recover and finish fourth.
The USRA Modifieds had some of their best racing all year. We don’t often mention the results of heat races, but the first heat for the A Mods was one of the best we’ve seen this season. Richard Layne would hold off Shadren Turner, Houston Johnson, and Tyler Hibner, to win with all four cars maybe seven car lengths apart from first to fourth. Turner would pull away in the feature with Tyler Hibner closing late as lap traffic made it close at the end, but Turner would hold on to win.
Another great weekend of racing, thank you to the drivers, crew, officials, sponsors, and of course the fans for making it happen. Full results below and we’ll see you next week!
