I-35 Speedway Press Release 9-26-2020

What a superb September Night or racing at I-35 Speedway! The drivers and their hot rods continued to come in up to race time.  When all was said and done, 125 competitors were ready to do battle on the track.  What great battles we enjoyed!

E Mods opened the night of racing with Casey Burnett and Shaunie Lanning earning heat wins.  This set up a feature race to be talked about all week long.  As the thunderous herd of cars entered turn one on lap one Burnett spun sending him to the back of the 16-car field.  By lap 4 he was again in the top 4.  Kameron Hanes raced to the early lead but was challenged by Lanning and Michael Taylor III.  Burnett worked his way back into the top 4 through daring passes and yellow flag restarts. All this exciting racing led to several of the last laps with Hanes running the high groove, Burnett the middle and Lanning the bottom groove.  Yes, that was how outstanding the track conditions were to enjoy three grooves of racing.  At the finish, three wide out of four, it was Hanes first by .271 of a second over Lanning and Burnett was .482 of second behind Hanes, Taylor was fourth.  Breathtaking, cheer for your favorite racing!

News flash and it is always news when a 14-time winner does not win, but there was a new King of the Sport Compact class on this night.  This class which just three years ago was added to on the promise of a minimum of six cars has rapidly expanded and become the true beginner class.  Young Isaiah Penton, who will be moving into a Stock Class next year, came and conquered.  He was off at the drop of the green and took a full turn lead.  At the finish it was Penton taking the checkered with John Willard in second, Kris Foote third, and David Miller fourth.

The Midwest Lightning Sprints enjoyed a full field of twenty cars with several visiting from Minnesota and North Dakota.   On their final night of 2020 it was the Minnesota Truscinski gang taking first and second.  Alan was first and Alex was second.  Rapidly improving and local favortie Emma Martin brought her machine home in third.

Twenty-two Pure Stock Drivers tackled the high banks of I-35 Speedway.  Three heats saw Brandon Dixon, Leroy Morrison, and Blake Peeler with wins.  Feature time it was Morrison taking the lead and fending off numerous challenges by Dixon, Peeler, Brandon Long, and Reili Yonts.

The Midwest Limited Late Models was win number 15 for Kerry Davis.  Paul Glendenning was second in the feature and first in the heat.

All the racing led to the USRA ultra-competitive racing.  In the USRA B Mods, point leader Nic Hanes raced to the lead followed by second in points Travis Cadwallader.  Lonnie Hibner was in third waiting for a mistake by either of the front runners.  Cadwallader got under Hanes and made the pass on the low side and never looked back taking a 3 second win.  Hanes while leading in points is still looking for his first 2020 win.  Hibner was third with Dillon McCowan coming home fourth.

The USRA Stock Car National Championship must be a battle fans of this class are watching.  As of September 18, Doug Keller was only a few points behind Mitch Hovden for the USRA Championship.  This night saw 14 competitors in competition.  Heat wins went to Jeff Dixon and Blake Peeler.  At the drop of the green flag for the feature it was Keller on kill mode racing to the lead from his inside second row starting position.  Keller takes the win over by two seconds over the battle between Peeler and Dixon for second.  Peeler claimed second, Dixon third, and Steve Herrick worked his way to fourth.

The USRA Modified race could have two families in a Hatfield (Hibner) and McCoy (Johnson) feud.  As the track announcer pointed out to the large crowd it was Hibner, Johnson, Hibner, Johnson as they came around to complete the first lap.  It was Lee Hibner with the lead, Houston Johnson in second, Tyler Hibner in third, and Austin Johnson in fourth.  For several laps you would see the Johnson brothers pull even with their Hibner counterpart only to see the Hibners’ hold onto their challenge spot.  At the finish Ed Noll was able to get under Austin Johnson to claim fourth, making it a Lee Hibner win, Houston Johnson second, Tyler HIbner third, and Noll fourth finale.

Next week it is Show Me Spectacular racing at the legendary speedway as these battles continue through October.
