I-35 Speedway Hosts Another Big Night Of Action Packed Racing
By I-35 Speedway Announcer, Mark Merrell
(Winston, Missouri)
The E-Mods began the features For Missouri One Call Night At The Races. Matt Dorssom went to McCarthy Auto Group Winner’s Circle the first three weeks of the 2019 racing season. However, a different driver would find the way to victory lane. Brandon Bubba Beam started from inside row one, and was quick at the drop of the green flag. Jessie Mulich, outside row one, had other ideas. Mulich found the setup and the groove he was looking for, and scored his first win. Justin Asher weaved his way from inside row five, finishing second, with Dorssom third, Steven Makar fourth, and Gary Don Ainsworth fifth
The Show Me Vintage Racers had their second visit to I-35 for the year, producing another new first place finisher. Elmer Fudd was very fast, running from inside row three. Fudd didn’t waste anytime running toward the front of the pack. Steve Hughes had the lead early, with Fudd and Damon Clevenger close behind. Fudd maneuvered around Hughes for the lead and eventual win, with Jeremy Turner second, Mickey Fleetheart third, Ray Hughes fourth, and Doran Clevenger fifth.
Luke Ramsey found his way to McCarthy Auto Group Winner’s Circle two weeks ago, and was not to be denied his second win of the year. Ramsey started outside row one for the Pure Stock feature. Pole sitter Beau Wells, always fast, along with Sol Bennet, Matthew Matsukevich, Greg Gilbert, Tobin Bartlett, and Blaine Yonts put on an awesome battle for the lead. Ramsey, finding the high side to his liking, managed to keep the hungry pack in his rear view mirror, and thus, scored the win.
Tommy Cordray had no problem the first two weeks running repeat trips to victory lane. Gary Truelove ended Cordray’s streak last Saturday, hoisting his first place trophy to the night sky. The pair began the feature on row one, with Truelove to the inside. Cordray was not to be denied, however, and grabbed his third win of the season in the Midwest Limited Late Models division.
Last week, after obtaining his first win of 2019, John Willard announced that his, “Underdog,” 1/2cr Car had amassed 54 feature wins, and that once he hit 55, Willard would retire his racing machine, replacing it with a new car. Joesph Mick dropped the hammer from the pole position, and looked to be the car to beat. Unfortunately, Mick, while racing at top speed, exited the track, flying at full speed up and over the banking in turn two, disappearing into the darkness, out of the view of the grandstands. After the red flag for the incident, Mick was transported to the pit area. Mick was treated and released by the ambulance crew. Willard, on his, “Can’t Drive 55 (wins)” quest, ran the Underdog car to its final feature win, the second for Willard in 2019.
Kansas City, Kansas native, Chase Galvin faced adversity the first three weeks of the season, finishing outside the top five. Galvin, last years Out-Pace B-Mod USRA I-35 top finisher has been frustrated, to say the least. Prior to the feature, Galvin was wished good luck. Galvin responded that, “We need it.” Galvin started Inside row one, with Ben Moudry to his right. Galvin wasted no time finding the front, keeping several hungry drivers behind him. Holding on to the lead, following a few white knuckle restarts, Galvin raced his way to his first feature win At I-35 for the 2019 racing season. In McCarthy Auto Group Winner’s Circle, Galvin dedicated his win to prolific Kansas City driver, Doug Richards, who passed away earlier this year. Galvin stated that he wants to honor Richard’s memory with as many wins as he can obtain this season.
The USRA American Racer Stock Cars put on a nail biting race, primarily between Tim Shields, and Derek Green. At the start of the event, Austin O’Neal raced into the lead, holding the spot for the early stages of the race. Shields raced by O’Neal, and into the lead. Green followed suit, setting up a tight battle between The pair. Shields held off Green, who pestered Shields lap after lap. As they raced into the final lap, heading into turn three, Shields and Green peered out in front of them to find Thomas Ground just ahead, running at the back of the field. Racing around Ground out of two four heading for the checkered flag, side-by-side, the two drivers provided a jaw dropping finish. Race officials determined the Green edged out Shields for the win by mere inches.
In the final race of the evening, the USRA Modifies rolled onto the high banked 3/8 mile track. Last year’s USRA I-35 Track Champion Dennis Elliott has yet to make it to victory lane, finishing second twice, and fourth as well for the start of the 2019 season. Elliott started outside row three. Last week’s feature victor, Lee Hibner began his quest for back-to-back wins outside row one. Hibner ran to the lead, with Austin Johnson, Zach Sanders, Nic Bidinger, Chad Clancy, Ed Noll, and Elliott in hot pursuit. Sanders went off the banking in turn two, coming to a rest there, ending his chances for the win. Hibner continued up front, as Elliott again somehow appeared racing through the traffic jam, and into second behind Hibner. Holding off Elliott running the cushion, Hibner made it to McCarthy Auto Group Winner’s Circle. However, during post race inspection, race officials disqualified Hibner, and Elliott was credited with his first feature win of the year.
Next Saturday at I-35 Speedway, it’s Metcalf Carstar Night At The Races, during which, the track will be honoring the late, and former I-35 Speedway Champion, Cletus “Mudcat” Murray
