Fifth Annual Smokin Trackside BBQ Bash, Vintage Racing, USRA Racing, Weekly Racing at I-35 Speedway, August 7 and 8, 2020

Five years ago, the Smokin Trackside BBQ Bash began combining a Kansas City Barbeque Society event with weekly racing.  Always the second weekend of August, the aroma of the racetrack changes from a morning of smoked woods to smoked meat to the smell of spent racing fuel that evening.  This weekend was no different but has a new national event been born?

Thanks to the efforts of I-35 Speedway and Vintage Racing aficionado Steve Tanner various Vintage competitors from around the country (Alabama, Illinois, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, and Arkansas represented) arrived to bring back the memories of yesteryear.  Drivers were raving about the track, even after a 3.5-inch downpour Friday into Saturday, and the friendliness of the staff.  They are looking forward to making this an annual event and growing it into a national event.

Congratulations to Piggin Whiskey O.G. for winning the Smokin Trackside BBQ Bash.

Congratulations to Kameron Hanes, currently second in points in the E Mods, who earned his second win of the year.

Pure Stocks Points Leader Brandon Dixon added his sixth win of the season in his twelve starts.

David Miller III sits second in points and earned his third Sport Compact win of the 2020 season.

Mike Taylor Jr. has made it two weeks in a row in the Midwest Limited Late Models.

Shadren Turner is also a double up racer as he too made it two feature wins in a row in the USRA B Mods.

2019 USRA Track Champion Jeff Dixon grabbed the lead and never relinquished the position taking the checkered for his first win of 2020.

In the Show Me Vintage it was Mickey Fleehart with the win.

The USRA A Mod feature was described as one of the best races of the night as Houston Johnson grabbed the early lead with his brother Austin in chase.  Yellow flags kept taking away the brothers lead as the Delaware restarts bunched the competition.  Tyler Hibner took advantage of these starts to grab the lead from Johnson and win his third USRA A Mod feature of 2020.

The final feature of the night was the Outlaw Vintage race won by Ron Lefholz.

There were 25 races for the fans to enjoy.  I-35 Speedway continues the 2020 racing season on Saturday August 15 with the Cletus Murray Memorial and the USAC Midwest Wingless Sprint Special.
