Dotson, Huls and Noll Among Drivers to Claim the Top Spot on Generational Buildings Night at the Races

(WINSTON, Mo.) – The Show-Me Vintage Racers took to I-35 Speedway for the first feature of the night. David Baldwin lead a majority of the race, but Damon Clevenger stayed patient, worked his way past Allen Guthrie for second and made his move at the right time to pick up the feature win. Guthrie finished second, Baldwin third, with Steve Hughes fourth and Shirley Nelson fifth.

The Pure Stocks added a new driver to the win list for the 2018 season. Kristchon Hisel struggled with the handling of his car early, but after a caution something clicked as he pestered race leader Beau Wells until he made the move and picked up the win in his first race this season. Beau Wells finished second, with Rylee Fuller, Cody Herpel and Ron Hill rounding out the top five.

The Grand Nationals found John Hanson taking the early lead. Houston Johnson, who normally runs the cushion, found himself having to find a way to make his car work on the bottom. Around halfway he threw a slider, made it stick and drove to another victory. John Hanson finished second and Lee Costner third.

For only the second time this season, the sport compacts saw a repeat winner drive to McCarthy Auto Group Winner’s Circle as Rick Girard cruised to his second win on the season. His son, Dakota Girard finished second with David Miller III third. Alvin Cooney drove to another top five, finishing fourth and Dave Petty Jr. finished fifth.

The E-Modifieds saw the return of four-time winner Chris Mercer back on track after a two-week absence. He and Chris Dishong raced to one of the best battles of the night. Dishong took the lead early, but Mercer rarely left his quarter panel as they battled side-by-side. Dishong cleared Mercer after halfway, but still Mercer pestered Dishong. Mercer bobbled with a few laps to go and gave Dishong enough breathing room to pick up the win. Mercer finished second, with A.J. Sayers third, Leroy Morrison fourth and two-time winner Caleb Pugh fifth.

The ULMA Late Models made their return to I-35 Speedway for the third time this season. Tommy Cordray used a front-row starting position to take the lead early and cruise to the feature win. Cody Holtkamp finished second, while pole-sitter Lane Ehlert finished third. Jon Binning finished fourth and Matthew Lance battled back from heat race issues to a top five finish.

By the time the USRA B-Modifieds took to the track, it had slicked off and provided multiple grooves for racing. On the start, those grooves were put to use as 20 cars stayed two and three-wide through the first few laps. Front-row starter Ed Noll used the battles behind him to stay safe out front. Noll lead the first fourteen laps in easy fashion, but rarely is winning that easy. A yellow flag flew, setting up a two-lap shootout. On the restart, Chase Galvan used up the bumper of Noll and gave him everything he could handle. Noll kept his cool and picked up his fourth win of the season, while Galvan finished second. Daniel Harris and Corey Myers battled all race long for third, with Harris prevailing for that position. Eddie Schwope Jr. charged late to take the last spot in the top five.

The USRA Stock Car feature saw Abe Huls drive to a dominating feature win, leading every lap. Huls made the trek all the way from Illinois in preparation for the Gary Davis Super 66 Stock Car race on June 16. Dean Wray spent all race holding off countless charges from Jeff Dixon on his way to a second-place finish. I-35 Speedway points leader Jeff Dixon finished third, with Cletus Murray fourth and Jason Estes fifth.

For the second straight week, the USRA Modifieds ran 20 laps without seeing the color yellow. Mark Dotson lead all 20 laps on his way to the feature win. Dennis Elliott and USRA Modified national points contender Darron Fuqua may have had faster racecars but could not settle their battle for second in time to chase down Dotson. Fuqua, running the high side, and Elliott, running the low side, stayed side-by-side for most of the feature. Fuqua finally cleared Elliott for second with two laps to go. The gap between Dotson and Fuqua closed to a car length at the checkered flag, with Dotson winning, Fuqua second and Elliott a close third. Darren Shaw finished fourth, with Derrick Hicks fifth.
