A Thrilling Evening At I-35 Speedway For McCarthy Auto Group Night At The Races

For Immediate Release:

From Mark Merrell – I-35 Speedway Track Announcer

(Winston, MO)

After enduring five months without racing, including a harsh winter, race fans filled the grandstands at I-35 Speedway for opening night, in hopes of some exciting racing, and they got their wish and more.

The newly formed Midwest Limited Late Models also included the Midwest Outlaw Vintage Racing Series In their feature event. Tommy Cordray started on the pole position, and at the drop of the green flag, Cordray had Eddie Schwope, Jr hot in pursuit. The pair battled back and forth, as Mike Taylor, Jr, Houston Johnson, and Matthew Lance were on the trail of Cordray and Schwope. Cordray was able to hang on for the win, with Schwope second, and Taylor third. Dennis Fair finished ahead of Andy Wiles, and Steve Tanner, for the victory in the Midwest Outlaw Vintage Racing Series.

The E-Mods took the track. Matt Dorssom started outside row one, but quickly made his way to the front of the pack. Shaunie Lanning and Leroy Morrison had quite a battle, going door-to-door for several laps. Dorssom kept the pair behind him, grabbing the win, with Lanning second, and Morrison third.

In the Sport Compact feature, Bobby Key started on the pole position. Key went to the front, with a pack of seventeen other drivers, all looking for the win. John Willard, who stated outside row two, was making a charge to the front, when mechanical problems sent him out of the race. Key kept the others at bey, including a hard charging David Miller III, and Joseph Mick, racing his way to the win.

The pole position looked to be the key to victory lane, and that’s what pole sitter, Dakota Girard had in mind in the Pure Stock feature. Girard led from the drop of the green flag, but was constantly side-by-side with Josh Modde, who began his quest for the win inside row two. Ron Hill was running in third, as he was fending off serval drivers, including Cody King, Beau Wells, and Kerry Ayers. Coming out of turn four on the final lap, Modde and Girard were side-by-side, when the pair collided together just before the finish line, and the checkered flag. Girard ended up against the outside retaining wall facing the wrong direction, when another competitor had nowhere to go, making contact with Girard. The packed crowd held it’s collective breath, as the safety crew came to Girard’s aid. Thankfully, Girard was able to walk on his own power to the awaiting ambulance, and was eventually treated and released. Modde was assessed a penalty for the incident, awarding the win to the third place finisher, Ron Hill.

In the USRA B-Mods, Ty Griffith started inside row one, and looked to be well on his way to the win. Shadren Turner has other ideas, hounding Griffith with moves to the inside line in the corners, at times side-by-side with Griffith. Dakota Foster, Chad Walker, and Randy Ainsworth with tight in the lead group as well. Just past the halfway point in the race, Griffith raced out of turn two, when his racing machine suddenly slowed, coasting to the outside line down the backstretch. The speeding group, two-by-two just behind Griffith, scrambled to find a path by him. With no where to go, Ainsworth made heavy impact after attempting to slow his Modified. Both drivers were checked and released with no injuries. Turner never looked back after the restart racing his way into victory lane.

Jeff Dixon was sporting a new paint scheme for the season for the USRA Stock Cars. Dixon wasted no time finding his way to the lead, racing out of turn two on the first lap, appearing as if his Stock Car was suddenly launched from a cannon. Dixon held on for the win, in hopes of repeating as the USRA I-35 Stock Car Champion.

In the final race of the night, and certainly one of the most exciting, the USRA A-Mods put on a, no seat requirement event for the fans. Nic Bidinger began his quest for winner’s circle from inside row one. Just to Bidinger’s Right was the Rocket Man, Rick Bebee. Tyler Hibner, along with the 2018 USRA I-35 Track Champion

Dennis Elliott, just behind the pair in row two. An incident in turn four, collected Bebee, Ed Noll, and Tyler Hibner, among others. This set up the monumental contest between Bidinger and Elliott, as they exchanged the lead,  lap, after lap, with Bidinger running on the high-side cushion, and Elliott on the low side, racing near the apron on the track. On the final lap, the pair raced out of turn four side-by-side for the win, with the crowd on it’s feet, as Bidinger edged out Elliott for the victory.

Next Saturday, I-35 Speedway will host, Tompkins Industries Night At The Races, with a visit from the, Show Me Vintage Racing Series.
